Arrest & Control Tactics Instructor

Course Description

This is a train-the-trainer course designed to teach the Police Training Institute’s Arrest & Control Tactics system. Officers will become certified instructors in PTI’s system, which includes teaching empty hand arrest and control tactics, baton, and OC spray. Officers will learn to utilize the Police Training Institute’s Use of Force Scale in their lessons. Officers will also learn how to use step-by-step breakdowns of each technique and then work these techniques into specifically designed training drills. Officers will be given the opportunity to teach these skills under the guidance of one of the Police Training Institute’s Primary Master Control Tactics Instructors.

Subject areas include:

  • Utilizing the use of force scale
  • Arrest and control tactics (including baton and OC spray)
  • Methods of instruction and effective teaching techniques
  • Coach-pupil drill training

There are no prerequisites to this course. Anyone who is working in law enforcement may enroll.

This Course Meets the Following State Required Training Mandates:

  • Civil Rights (1.0hr)
  • Constitutional Use of Law Enforcement Authority (1.0hr)
  • Procedural Justice (4.0hrs)
  • Use of Force – De-Escalation Techniques (12.0hrs with 6.0hrs Scenario-based credit)
  • Use of Force – Law Concerning Stops, Searches, and the Use of Force (3.0hrs)
  • Use of Force – Officer Safety Techniques, including cover, concealment, and time (6.0hrs with 3.0hrs Scenario-based credit)

    Recertification

    In order to obtain the status of Master Arrest and Control Tactics Instructor, Arrest and Control Tactics Instructors must gain experience by teaching within their department or other law enforcement officers. Therefore, officers will need two years of experience prior to becoming a Master Arrest and Control Tactics Instructor. After two years of certification, officers will return for a two-day course (16 overall hours) and demonstrate their understanding of the PTI’s Arrest and Control Tactics methods and philosophy. During this two-day course, officers will have the opportunity to assist in teaching a control tactics block of instruction with basic recruit officers attending the academy. Those officers who have already obtained the status of Master Arrest Control Tactics Instructor will return every three years for recertification.
